Dongxi: A New Kind of Shop Opens in Shanghai

Tucked into a quiet alley in downtown Shanghai, a new space has opened its doors — and it doesn’t fit neatly into any one category. That’s the point.

“Every object has a story, you just need to find it, and find the right place for it to be discovered.”

Dongxi is part antique shop, part flower stall, part gallery, part café. Step inside and the boundaries blur almost immediately: a Qing dynasty cabinet sits beside a contemporary ceramic sculpture; fresh peonies spill out of a weathered brass urn; a shelf of curious, hard-to-name objects sits just past the espresso counter. Nothing here is trying to be matched or categorized. Everything is trying to be interesting.

What’s Inside /
Antiques and unique objects. The heart of Dongxi is a rotating collection of antiques and one-of-a-kind pieces — sourced, considered, and placed with real intention. These aren’t museum pieces behind glass; they’re objects meant to be picked up, asked about, and eventually taken home.

Live plants and flowers. Greenery and fresh-cut flowers thread through the space, softening the hard edges of old wood and stone. It’s less “shop with some plants in it” and more a small indoor garden that happens to also sell antiques.

Contemporary art. Alongside the historical pieces, Dongxi makes room for present-day work — paintings, ceramics, small sculptures — creating a quiet dialogue between old and new that runs through the entire space.

Coffee and cake. And because good browsing deserves good company, Dongxi serves coffee and cake, turning what could be a quick errand into something worth lingering over.

The Idea Behind It / 灵感由来
The name itself — dongxi (东西) — is the everyday Mandarin word for “thing” or “stuff,” a small linguistic wink at a shop built entirely around objects: old ones, new ones, living ones, edible ones. It’s an invitation to slow down and look closely at things, rather than scroll past them.

Set in one of the city’s alleyways, away from the churn of the main shopping streets, Dongxi is designed for people who want to wander — expats and travelers looking for something with a story, alongside locals hunting for the unexpected.
